Top tips for fitting your incontinence pads, pants & nappies

Ever opened a pack of incontinence pads, pants or nappies and thought “What on Earth do I do here?” Putting on your incontinence items isn’t always the most straightforward thing in the world. But, we’re here to help. In this article, we’ll go over how to apply each of our flagship wearable products: incontinence pads, pants & nappies.

How to fit a Vivactive Shaped Pad:

Remember, when fitting Shaped Pads they should always be paired with Net Fixation Pants, which help to keep the product in the correct position (you don’t need Net Fixation Pants for discreet pads).

Step 1: You’ll need to start by pulling the Net Fixation Pants up to just above the knee, with the top folded down (this will help you secure the pad later). Gently open the pad, folding in half lengthways to form a cupped shape, this activates the anti-leak cuffs.

Step 2: With the pad folded, pass it between your legs from front to back with the back sheet turned away from the skin. Centre the pad by using the wetness indicators as a guide (every pad has two wetness indicator lines. These are yellow, but they turn blue when wet). Ensure the larger part of the pad covers the buttock area and the smaller area covers the front.

Step 3: Ensure the front of the pad is fitted up towards the lower abdomen and the back of the pad towards the cleft of the buttocks. The anti-leak cuffs should fit closely at the groin. If positioned correctly the front of the pad will sit slightly lower at the front than the back.

Step 4: Pull up the pants to fit securely over the pad, ensuring the pants are fitted well at the top of the legs and that the pad remains closely fitted at the groin. Then fan and smooth out the product, paying particular attention to the back of the pad, ensuring it's crease-free. The pad should sit slightly higher at the back than the front. Adjust the pad and pants as required to ensure the user feels comfortable and secure.

How to fit a Vivactive nappy (slip):

There’s a couple of ways you can get into your nappy. Either standing up, or lying down. Have a read and maybe try them both out to see which one works best for you.

Whilst standing:

You’ll need to gently open up the pad, folding it in half lengthways. The absorbent area of the pad will need to be facing inwards. While the pad is still folded, pass it between the legs from front to back. Open the pad out over the buttocks and lower abdomen, ensuring the side with tapes is placed at the back.

Line up your waist and centre correctly using the wetness indicators as a guide (as mentioned previously, every pad has two wetness indicator lines. These are yellow, but they turn blue when wet). Make sure the soft elastics are fitted closely into your groin area and fasten the resealable tapes. The position of the tapes is entirely dependent on your needs. When fitting, it’s important to create a seal around the legs and groin areas to reduce risk of leakage.

Whilst lying down:

Gently open out the pad and then fold in half lengthways with the absorbent area of the pad facing inwards. Lie down on your side, keeping the pad folded and pass it between your legs from front to back. Open the pad out over the buttocks and lower abdomen, ensuring the side with the fixation tapes is placed at the back. Line it up with the waist and centre correctly using the wetness indicators as a guide.

Fasten the resealable tape on the upper-most side. Then, gently roll them and secure the tapes on the opposite side. Like the standing variation, it’s important to create a seal around the legs and groin to reduce risk of leakage.

How to correctly wear Vivactive pants:

Step 1: Firstly, you’ll want to measure your waist to make sure you’ve got the correct size. Sizing is really important as it’ll ensure you’re getting maximum protection. You can read more about that here. Start by folding the pull up pants in half lengthways to activate the anti-leak cuffs.

Step 2: Ensuring the sticker is at the back, step into the pants and pull them up, adjusting for your own personal comfort and security.

Step 3: Remove the pull up pants by either pulling them down or simply tearing the side seams.

Step 4: Once removed, roll-up the pad and dispose of it where possible. We’re in currently trying to ensure men get equal access to sanitary bins by having outdated legislation changed. Read more about the ‘Boys need bins’ campaign here.
