Before We Start: Choose The Right Incontinence Product For Your Needs

It all starts with choosing the right incontinence product for your needs. If you’re experiencing small leaks, you probably don’t want to be using a massive, heavy-duty nappy. Likewise, if you’re experiencing big leaks regularly then a small discreet pad simply won’t do. Although your decision will be based on multiple aspects, here’s an overview:

  • Discreet incontinence Pads: Discreet pads are usually smaller, more discreet, and highly versatile. Because of these characteristics, they are ideal for active adults and professionals looking for an effective all-day solution. They‘re smaller than large-shaped pads and are usually worn inside your regular underwear. The absorbency levels of discreet pads are lower than what you might find with large-shaped pads, but what they lack in absorbency they make up for in discretion and mobility.
  • Large-shaped pads: Large-shaped pads are a heavy-duty option, built specifically to handle big leaks. Their huge absorption capabilities and traditionally bulky design mean they’re geared mostly toward people with chronic incontinence and people who are less mobile. Large-shaped pads are usually paired with fixation pants to keep them extra secure and in place.
  • Disposable incontinence Pants: Pull-up pants are more secure and absorbent. They are perfect for people who are still mobile but require a more efficient solution to contain leakages and odours. Incontinence pants present an easy and discreet solution for managing incontinence. They’re built to mimic the classic fit of regular underwear, offering a snug and comfy fit. Just slip them on like you would any other pair of pants or briefs, but with the added benefit of a highly absorbent pad to soak up liquids. Once they reach capacity, simply tear the sides, dispose of them, and you're good to go.
  • Washable incontinence pants: Washable incontinence pants are a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to disposables. You only need to buy a few pairs, so they offer significant long-term cost savings. With proper care, they can be used over and over again. It’s worth noting however that the absorbency levels of washable pants is significantly lower than some of the other options. These are definitely for people with small leaks.
  • Adult Nappies: Adult nappies provide a secure, absorbent solution for people with mobility issues. They can be easily secured and removed through secure side straps (you won’t need to stand on one leg to take it off or put a new one on! Adult nappies are also known as adult diapers or slips. They’re durable and offer maximum absorbency as well as coverage. Their secure design means they offer the best overall protection against leakage.

Incontinence Hacks: Top Tips For Using Incontinence Items

Now that you know the main differences between the most popular incontinence products, let’s look at a few key tips to make the most of these items.

Don't replace them after every little leak!

It might seem like a bit of a strange concept at first. But, think about it, if you’re wearing highly absorbent pants that can hold upwards of 2300ml of urine, you don’t need to change after a little dribble leaks out. The technologies in disposable pants nowadays are exceptional, they’ll eat up small leaks and lock them away, so your skin is dry and fresh. You only need to change out of the pants when the absorbent core is full. It’s worth mentioning though, that any faecal leakage means you’ll need to change disposables right away. By changing only when it’s really necessary, you’ll find that you start to go through packs much slower, saving you money in the long run.

Get your sizing right

If you’re weaning pants or nappies, it’s really important that you get your sizes right. If you go for a size that’s too big, you might experience leaks, rustling and chafe, as well as visible bulky pants. If your incontinence products are too small, you may end up with skin irritation (sores), limited mobility from the tightness, difficulty getting them on and off.

So, what are you supposed to do? There are two simple answers here.

  1. Get the tape measure out and get an accurate idea of what your waist and hip measurements are. Once you’ve got a good idea of your size, you can match up the measurements to the specifications of the products you’re looking to buy. Every brand's idea of small/medium/large is slightly different so do yourself a favour and always have a quick check just to be sure the size you’re buying is the best for you.
  2. Experiment with different sizes. Initially, this might not seem like a good idea, as it means a bit of extra spending. However, in the grand scheme of things, you’ll save some money and peace of mind. It could save you from the hassle of dealing with leaks or skin irritation down the road. Experiment with sizing up and down, try them on and see which one fits you best.

Prioritise Quality Materials and Ergonomic Shapes

Studies have shown that the materials and shapes used in the design and construction of incontinence products really matter in the level of comfort, hygiene, and confidence of the user. When an absorbent pad, nappy, or pants is made in high-quality materials and designed in an ergonomic shape, you’ll be able to enjoy unparalleled levels of comfort - and even forget that you are wearing an incontinence product!
