What Are Incontinence Booster Pads & How Do They Work?

Thousands of people all over the UK already use wearable incontinence products, such as pads, pants, and slips, to manage their incontinence.

With so many products out there, it can be hard to keep up with the latest ranges and figure out what products are best for you.

For some, their current incontinence products do a great job of helping them manage any leaks and continue with their day-to-day. However, if you find that your current incontinence products aren’t as effective as you’d like, you may not be alone.

If you are looking for slightly more coverage in the absorbency of your incontinence products, but either can’t switch, or simply don’t want to, booster pads might be just what you are looking for.

What Are Booster Pads?

On the surface, it’s easy to assume that booster pads are not so different from your regular incontinence pads or other products. Whilst they are both designed to help you with leak management, how they do so is very different.

Are you finding that you have reached the maximum absorbency you can get with your current range of products? Do you still find yourself needing more absorbency?

Well, that’s where booster pads stand out as a unique solution for you.

Unlike your regular incontinence pads, booster pads are not designed with the waterproof backing that has become the staple for other incontinence products.

This is to ensure that liquid can first pass through the booster pad, with excess liquid flowing through into your regular incontinence product. Put simply, this allows the booster pad to increase the level of liquid that is absorbed during a leak, without compromising the effectiveness of your existing product.

Booster pads are therefore designed to fit into your existing incontinence pants, pads, or slips. They are typically designed in two shapes: rectangular or hourglass-shaped pads.

Rectangular booster pads resemble typical menstrual pads, designed to rest on top of the core of your outer product. Meanwhile, hourglass-shaped booster pads are contoured and have wide panels. These are better suited to plus-sized users or those looking for increased protection from leaks by offering more protection at the wearer’s front and back.

How Do Booster Pads Work?

Booster Pads are really simple to use and are designed to minimise the amount of added bulk to your existing product.

The booster pad is placed into the inner layer of your existing incontinence product, so that it sits above it. Some booster pads come with an included adhesive strip, which is used to secure the booster pad in place and ensure it doesn’t move within your usual incontinence product.

The booster pad will begin to absorb liquid before your usual incontinence product, becoming saturated, until reaching capacity. When the booster pad is full, its flow-through design ensures that excess liquid is filtered down into your main incontinence product, such as a pad, pant, or slip.

It’s incredibly important to remember that these are a supplementary product and should be used together with another product, such as an incontinence pad.

Why Should I Use A Booster Pad?

Booster pads can drastically increase the effectiveness of your existing incontinence products, helping you manage your leaks without needing to switch to a new product.

If your current incontinence pad or product is working without any issues, it may well be that you don’t need to use a booster pad. However, their unique design means that they offer a number of benefits that could revolutionise how you use incontinence products:

Extend The Wear Time Of Your Products:

Booster pads can drastically reduce the number of times you need to switch pads, pants or slips throughout the day. This could be a game-changer for days when you’re very busy, travelling, or toilet access is restricted.

This can even help you save money, reducing the amount of main incontinence products you get through in a day or night.

Convenient Changes When You’re Busy:

By absorbing leaks first, simply switching out your booster pad can be a really convenient way of staying on the go without the hassle of requiring a complete change.

As they’re very compact, carrying a backup supply of booster pads when you’re travelling can be far less cumbersome than travelling with packs of incontinence pads, pants, or slips.

Reduce Interruptions When Sleeping:

Do you find your nights are interrupted by endless trips to the bathroom? Booster pads are suitable for use with both night and day incontinence products.

For those who experience light leaks throughout the night, booster pads can be quickly switched out without needing to get out of bed or go to the toilet.

Easy to Switch and Replace:

Booster pads are designed for easy insertion into your main incontinence product. This ensures a comfortable fit without any compromise in convenience for both wearers and caregivers.

How Do I Use A Booster Pad?

Wearing a booster pad couldn’t be simpler. After a few tries, we are confident you will agree! Here are some quick tips to get you started:

  • Wear Your Incontinence Product As Normal: Remember, booster pads are only effective when paired with your usual incontinence pads, pants, or slips.
  • Prepare Your Booster Pad:  For booster pads with an adhesive strip, remove the cover. Pads without adhesive strips should stay in place during wear, but be careful when removing your underwear, as the pad may fall out.
  • Insert Your Booster Pad: Place your booster pad inside your main incontinence product, position it in the center of your incontinence pad, pant, or slip. If it has an adhesive strip, make sure it is stuck down securely where you want it to be positioned.
  • Replace Your Booster Pad When It's Full: Once the booster pad is saturated, simply remove and dispose of it. You can then replace it with another booster pad or continue your day using your main incontinence product on its own.

Booster Pads: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are Booster Pads Similar To Incontinence Products?

No, they’re not. Whilst they both work to manage leaks, booster pads are designed without any waterproof backing. This allows them to absorb liquid in the first instance, then allow the remaining liquid to flow through to your main product.

  • Can I Use Booster Pads Instead Of Incontinence Pads?

No, they are not a replacement for pads. Instead, booster pads should be used in conjunction with other incontinence products. They work by increasing the overall asborbency of your other products.

  • Are Booster Pads Worth The Money?

If you find that your current products don’t have enough absorbency, then they are definitely worth the money. They are also useful if you need your existing pads, pants, or slips to last longer during an important event or when travelling.

  • Can I Use More Than One Booster Pad At The Same Time?

Technically, you can wear as many as you find comfortable. Some people may use multiple booster pads to ensure they are fully protected from leaks during an important event. However, if you find you are needing to use multiple booster pads consistently, it might be time to switch your main incontinence product for more absorbency

  • Where Can I Purchase Booster Pads?

You might struggle to find booster pads in local retail stores. However, there are many brands online that sell booster pads. Incontinence Choice offer a number of brands and ranges which you can look at here.

Vivactive are also bringing in their own range of booster pads later this year. For more information on the Vivactive range, check out our range of products here.
