Urge Incontinence: Managing Sudden and Unexpected Leaks

What Causes Urge Incontinence
Unlike the other main types of incontinence, the cause for urge incontinence is often not known. In these instances, the condition is often diagnosed as overactive bladder syndrome or idiopathic urge incontinence.
For many, the symptoms may get worse in times of stress. They may also be made worse by consuming diuretics such as caffeine (in tea, coffee, cola, etc) and by alcohol.
Some other common causes include:
- Bladder irritation: Brought on by conditions such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) or bladder stones.
- Neurological conditions: Such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, or following a stroke, where nerve signals to the bladder may be disrupted.
- Medications: Some prescriptive drugs, particularly diuretics, can increase urine production and may trigger urgency.
Common triggers (not causes):
- Hearing running water, exposure to cold, or a sudden change in position.
- Drinking larger volumes of liquid in a short period of time.
