A balanced diet is an important factor for a healthly lifestyle, it is even more so when you are suffering from incontinence and other stomach and bowel related ailments, eating well can have an impact on your symptoms as well as your general wellbeing.

With that in mind, there are a number of foods which can affect the stomach and cause bad reactions in the gut, and those with incontinence may find that it worsens their symptoms. Avoiding these foods, or limiting their intake might help your incontinence, and help you improve your lifestyle.

Some of the things to avoid are the following, as they may provoke symptoms such as abdominal cramps and diarrhea:

Portions that are too large.

Meals that are high in fat.

Lots of fried food.

Coffee, or too much caffeine in general.

Large in take of Alcohol.

There are also a number of foods that are considered gas producing (e.g., beans, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli etc) and eating too much may cause increased gaseousness which can lead to uncomfortableness in the stomach and also become odor forming with gas which can lead to embarassament.

If you sufferer from a senstive stomach, the bowel can also be ineffective in absorbing some types of sugar, eating too much of some types of these sugars can cause cramping or diarrhea (e.g., sorbitol, commonly used as a sweetener in candies, and gums; and fructose, also used as a sweetener and found naturally in honey as well as some fruits).

The effects of diet on incontinence symptoms are unique to the individual and therefore there is no perfect dietary plan for avoiding inconintnence, it is important to get a diagnosis from a healthcare profressional as they will be able to best guide you on the treatment of your individual needs and can provide dietary guidance while assessing individual circumstances and helping make sure that nutritional needs are being met through a balanced diet, and healthy eating habits.

For the best diagnosis incontinencechoice.co.uk always recommends you speak to your local GP or a healthcare professional. NHS.uk offers a healthcare service finder to give you information on your nearest health centre and the services it offers. The NHS also run a number of incontinence clinics, with specialist teams providing support and medical advice for people with bowel or bladder incontinence. To find out more about these services, please contact your local hospital.

The NHS also offer a plethora of information on eating healthy and the best foods to help maintain a active lifestyle, for more information please visit the NHS Good Food Page.

Choosing the right incontinence pants for your level and type of incontinence is important to help you maintain a full lifestyle, without compromising comfort, security and discretion.

The most common type of incontinence across both women and men is urinary incontinence, fortunately this also the easiest to treat and manage. With effective management and proper diagnosis, urinary incontinencec may disappear over time, depending on the cause. For more information on the most common types of incontinence please visit our article on types of incontinence in men. For the types of women’s incontinence, please visit our types of women’s incontinence article.

To get the best diagnosis of your incontinence, it is always best to consult with a medical professional. They will be able to give the best direction and advice on managing your incontinence, for mor information on this please visit our article on getting help with incontinence. Once you have a diagnosis and a suggested method management or treatment you will find there are a plethora of incontinence products available.

One of the most common types of incontinence management is wearing discreet incontinence pants. If your healthcare professional has advised you to wear them, then you may need help choosing the right kind of incontinence pants, as they come in many shapes and sizes and you should carefully consider some of the following:

Firstly, comfort is one of the most important aspects when deciding on what type of pants to use. You may consider pull-ups when you can manage to take care of them yourself without assistance from care providers. People who are bed-ridden or of limited movement may consider pants with side adhesive strips that are easy to remove and attach by a carer.

Secondly the absorption levels should be enough to hold the level of your incontinence. Mild urinary incontinence does not need thick pads. By identifying the right level of absorption you can save yourself the cost of more exepensive pants with higher absorption levels.

Another matter that maybe be important to those with sensitive skin. Incontinence pants can be brought with hypoallergenic inner material. Choosing the right size and material will allow the pants to breath and avoid potential allergies and infections. Also look for materials that are enviromentally friendly, thus minimizing the mess and hassle in disposing of the product.

Choosing the the right incontinence pants can help you save money and manage your symptoms and avoid potential problems. As choosing the wrong type of incontinence pants can hamper the treatment of your incontinence symptoms. For the best diagnosis we recommendsyou speak to your local GP or healthcare professional. NHS.uk has a healthcare service finder to help you locate your nearest health centre.

IncontinenceChoice.co.uk also offer 99p samples of our incontinence products, to give you a better idea if a particular incontinence product is for you and your level of incontinence.
Incontinence is often a muted topic of discussion, often left unmentioned and in some cases untreated due to embarrassment or inability to talk about symptoms. Telling friends and family about your incontinence can make it easier to manage your symptoms, help you get the emotional and physical support you need, and even help you to go about finding the right diagnosis.

It is important to remember that you are far from alone in your symptoms, in fact recent studies show that there are over 200 million people worldwide are affected by forms of incontinence, and many of those avoid proper treatment and diagnosis to avoid confronting the issue with friends, family or healthcare professionals. Knowing the facts about incontinence can eliminate the stigma and help you avoid potential detriments to your lifestyle.

If you, or a family member experience any kind of incontinence, it is important for them to be able to communicate comfortably with others, most notably medical professionals and trained carers who can assist them in selecting the best treatment and products for their symptoms. These treatments, thanks to technological advancements are now widely available and successful and, for some, even a cure. No longer do you have to worry about embarrassing odours or leakage and individuals can continue with active lifestyle.

The first step in confronting your incontinence symptoms is to get an assessment by a medical professional, which will help determine the type of incontinence you may be experiencing and the best method of treatment to meet your individual needs. For the best diagnosis incontinencechoice.co.uk always recommends you speak to your local GP or healthcare professional. NHS.uk has a healthcare service finder to help you locate your nearest health centre. The NHS also operate numerous continence clinics, with specialist teams providing support and medical advice for people with bowel or bladder incontinence. These may be useful for people who would rather speak to someone other than their local GP about their symptoms. To find out more about these clinics contact your nearest hospital for details.

There are common types of incontinence, which can be experienced either separately or in a variety of combinations, which we have previously discussed for common types of incontinence in women and common types of incontinence in men. Once the type, or combinations of types of incontinence that you/they are suffering from is determined a road to a successful treatment, cure or effective management of the condition can be laid out. These often include some of the following:

Diet modification

Behavioural therapy

Pelvic floor exercises

Medication

Supportive devices

Surgery

Disposable incontinence products

Washable incontinence products

Having effective knowledge of your symptoms and treatments can make it far easier to talk about incontinence, and with the aid of the many groups and charities available its easier than ever to get support and guidance. One of the largest incontinence groups in the UK is the Bladder and Bowel Foundation who offer help and guidance on finding out more about your incontinence, and who to talk to.

If you are interested in learning more about incontinence and the impact on older adults, there are many professional organizations, web sites, support groups and educational materials to assist you in your quest. We are collecting links to these organisations in our incontinence links.
It is often the case that women find their bodies go through a lot of changes during and after pregnancy and are never quite the same following childbirth. Among all of these changes, few are more upsetting than experiencing difficulties with bowel urgency and faecal incontinence post pregnancy.

If you are experiencing such symptoms, please be aware that you are not alone and this is a very common issue (if often unmentioned). Among several symptoms that may occur, they include a strong, immediate urge to go to the toilet, and some leaking either without you knowing, or immediately after using the toilet.

There are number of things that can increase your risk of suffering from incontinence following childbirth.

First time deliveries (risks are lessened significantly with subsequent pregnancies) are a common cause of incontinence in post pregnancy.

Damage to anal sphincter muscles during delivery can lead to faecal incontinence.

There is some evidence to suggest that using an episiotomy during childbirth can lead to incontinence problems. Also, the use of forceps during a delivery can be considered a factor.

Pregnancy itself can raise the risk of later incontinence in women, as it places a great amount of strain on the pelvic floor.

As always if you are suffering from any form of incontinence it is important to talk to your doctor about these symptoms. Your doctor will be in the best possible position to evaluate your symptoms, determine the cause and guide you towards a solution and products available.

For more information on the products available please visit our incontinence products store.
